No country should try to police others: Speaker
New Delhi, March 27 : In a veiled attack on the United States, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Thursday said that no country should take upon itself the role of a global policeman and impose its will on sovereign countries.
The Speaker took on the US while welcoming Oleh Bilorus, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs of Ukrainian Parliament. Chatterjee, according to an official release, said: “The aggressive posture on the part of some countries is a matter of concern. No country should take upon itself the role of global police and impose its will on sovereign countries.”
Chatterjee’s indirect criticism of the US is obviously at variance with the normal Government attitude towards the superpower. However, it is close to a consistent anti-US position of his own party, the CPI(M). Earlier too, the Speaker had hit out at the US when all eyes were focused on the Indo-US nuclear deal.
